As the pavements glistened with raindrops, and the light began to break through, we set out on our Oxford exploration. I had arrived in the dark, dragging myself from my warm bed in the early hours, but it was so worth it for this couple and this stunning place.
Rich in architecture and drenched in history, ‘the city of dreaming spires’ was all I remembered it to be. The last time I was here in winter was for my cousin’s wedding in Pembroke College, a gorgeous candlelit evening, in a beautiful tucked away street. I love it here, not just for beautiful buildings and inspiring minds but for the many memories it holds for our family too.
Charlotte and Andy really are such a cracking couple, so gentle and lovely, as we strolled along we discovered that we have quite a few mutual friends from completely different areas of my life. So many strange little connections between some fabulous people.
I’ve been thinking about photography lately (when do I not!), and I realise more and more that it’s less about the camera and more about my relationship to the person. It sounds obvious, but it’s actually so important. Especially when a wedding photographer. One of my best friends is getting married this year, and I’ve been giving her a little photographer advice. It’s all about choosing a photographer who you can trust, not just to capture the images but as a person too. To choose someone who understands your priorities, who gets your family dynamics, who you feel comfortable to be around; with or without a camera.
I find it so crazy but also amazing how couples invite me into their lives for a little while. In the wonderful time before their wedding pulling me alongside them into the excitement, the nerves and the craziness of wedding planning. Then on the day I’m there for their most personal moments, noticing those little glances, documenting their happiest memories and getting to know their closest family and friends. It’s a huge responsibility, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love, love, love it.
And what I love also is that for Charlotte and Andy this is just the start of their adventure towards their wedding, and I couldn’t be more excited to be here for them in their journey.
P.s. I’m dreaming of a wedding in one of these Colleges – any one wanna hit me up?
